Fed: Government rules out free imports of films

The federal government has hosed down movie industry concerns about open video and
DVD imports by ruling out any move to free up import laws.

The industry has warned country cinemas could close if restrictions on imports of DVDs
and videos are lifted, as people will no longer need cinemas to see first-release films.

But Arts Minister PETER MCGAURAN says the government has no intention of allowing parallel
imports of films, despite the recommendations of a national competition review.

Australian Democrats arts spokesman ADEN RIDGEWAY says the party would not support
any move to lift import restrictions unless there was proof the economy would benefit.
